We will also be delighted to assist you with certification of your vehicle for specific markets.
Internal combustion engines
Powertrain systems must satisfy continuously changing expectations and requirements. Technical and regulatory requirements in particular are the driving force behind technological advancements, and internal combustion engines are expected to fulfil more and more functions. We provide custom services for your powertrain, helping you to achieve your specific set of objectives. Such objectives include, for instance, enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
Combustion development
New legislation and continuously changing requirements relating to convenience, comfort, fuel consumption, and performance all result in ever increasing engine complexity. In this context, in-engine pollutant reduction is gaining more and more importance. That is why optimization of the design and performance of the combustion process in all phases of engine development is absolutely necessary for ensuring that current and future fuel economy targets and emission limits can be achieved. Our close relationship with the Bosch Powertrain Solutions division and our many years of experience and wealth of expertise mean we are best equipped to put together interdisciplinary teams that handle your projects with a very high level of professionalism and competence.
We place great importance on taking a holistic approach to the development process and are therefore able to offer you the following services:
- Complete or partial assumption of responsibility for combustion development
- Fuel system design
- Selecting appropriate components
- Fundamental analyses
- Assessment of potential and pre-production analyses performed on the engine test bench and vehicle

Software and function development
Software is a major vehicle component. It controls all the essential functions and processes. Complex systems simply cannot be implemented without it. The portion of software responsible for control functionalities in the vehicle will grow significantly in the coming years. With our extensive expertise in control strategy development, we are best equipped to supply you with our comprehensive solutions.

Calibration
As a single-source supplier, we offer an extensive calibration-related portfolio, from base calibration of the base engine to emission design and the related exhaust-gas treatment strategy. From initial engine parameterization through to volume-production readiness, we offer you calibration services for a wide variety of applications, taking into account all legal requirements. Not only do we provide this for existing mechatronic systems but for newly developed ones too. We handle all the parameterization tasks as well as optimization of the engine management’s base calibration for conventional internal combustion engines. Besides various measures implemented within the engine itself, exhaust-gas treatment systems also play an important role in efforts to meet emission requirements. We also place great importance on issues such as functional safety and OBD. Calibration related to start-up behavior and on-the-road performance is implemented in accordance with the customer’s requirements directly on the vehicle. Organizing and carrying out testing all over the world, performing on-the-road validation and endurance tests, and access to state-of-the-art testing facilities for development, validation, and support with certification round off our portfolio.
Real driving emissions engineering (RDE)
Due to new emission limits introduced to protect health and the environment, more and more measurements and tests are being prescribed by law. We at Bosch Engineering support you in the area of RDE by helping you establish a development strategy and by measuring RDE already at an early stage of the development process. So-called RDE frontloading makes it possible to achieve reliable system verification, identify critical recursions early on, and reduce the number of project iterations, thus saving time and development costs. Together with other Bosch divisions, we have a wide variety of testing facilities at our disposal, including altitude and climatic chassis dynamometers, portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) for measuring emissions under real-world operating conditions, and environmental simulation facilities (temperature-controlled chassis dynamometer). We also provide a tool chain on the dynamic engine test bench called the virtual interconnected testing environment (VITE), which is used for testing vehicle variants and different RDE test routes.
Our services on our test benches:
- Analysis and calibration of diesel, gasoline, and hybrid powertrain systems taking into consideration reproducible RDE aspects on the engine test bench and in the vehicle
- Emission analysis and emission calibration for variants
- Monitoring of the combustion process and exhaust-gas treatment concepts at an early stage under consideration of RDE engineering
- Evaluation of new components within the system
- Special testing: OBD, GPS-based functions, exhaust-gas treatment performance
- Variations due to different routes, traffic conditions, individual driving styles, etc.
- Systems development with real and virtual components in an interconnected setup on engine test benches
